About Me

Hello, I'm Mary Johnston and welcome to my website!

I was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, and am a recent graduate of the Sargent Conservatory of Theatre Arts at Webster University where I earned my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Stage Management and a Minor in Advertising and Marketing Communications. I graduated with Summa Cum Laude Academic Honors.

Growing up, I was constantly surrounded by art, theatre, and film. My parents would always have Turner Classic Movies on the tv and my mom would always be making some type of project out of cardboard in the basement. Her projects ranged from themed wedding card boxes, a British Phone Booth, a Doctor Who Tardis, and a Flintstones Car. She also would make hand-painted graduation banners for the family. Seeing her create these beautiful works of art truly inspired me to tap into my creative genes. As I grew up, I would help her create the various projects and get to be apart of the magic. To this day, I still watch and love classic movies.

During my sophomore year of high school, I discovered my passion for stage management. I had never done anything like it before but was willing to take on the challenge. Throughout my first production as the stage manager, I learned so much about the job and myself as a leader. One of the most rewarding elements was getting the opportunity to be apart of the production from casting until the final bow. I got to see the production grow and evolve over time. After that first show, I knew that I wanted to pursue stage management further.

To continue my education, I chose to attend Webster University. During my four years at the Sargent Conservatory of Theatre Arts, I continued to learn so much more about stage management and my passion grew. I had the honor of working with so many talented individuals who were all passionate about their craft and art form. It truly inspired me and my work. The love of the process grew with every project and production that I worked on.

In addition to stage management, I also decided to pursue a minor in Advertising and Marketing Communications. This field has always excited me. We as consumers are constantly surrounded by it as we go about our days. Art and persuasive verbiage play a major role in enticing the target audience to purchase products. Marketing and advertising help to make a business or service sell. If done right, that product, business or service will soar. If done wrong, that same business, product or service could sink.  The industry itself stands out to me because it is a truly creative environment. Everyone is working to create something new and unique that will be the selling point for the product. The main goal is to maximize profits and to help the business grow. Post-graduation, I am interested in pursuing a career in theatrical marketing in addition to being a freelance stage manager.
